Aerobic exercise, also known as cardio or endurance activity, is the cornerstone of most fitness training programs. Regardless of your athletic ability, age, or weight, aerobic activity is good for your body. Aerobic exercise is not only designed to help you lose weight or increase your athletic ability, it improves your mood and gives a general feeling of well being. During aerobic activity, you repeatedly move large and small muscle groups that target your lower and upper body's strength and endurance.
By breathing faster and deeper, this maximizes the amount of oxygen flowing through the blood system. When the heart beats faster, it increases the blood flow to your muscles and back to your lungs. Small blood vessels (capillaries) will widen to deliver more oxygen to the muscles and carry away waste products, such as carbon dioxide and lactic acid. The body will release endorphins which are poweful hormone-like substances that are produced in the brain and functions as a natural painkiller. During exercise, endorphins are released and produce feelings of euphoria and a general state of well being. The feelings produced can be so powerful that it can actually mask the pain.
